The filter is the most important part of the pool’s circulation system. Without it keeping your pool water in good condition would be impossible. The purpose of the filter is to remove particles, dead bacteria and fine debris from the pool’s circulation, preventing the water from clouding.

The time it takes for the total volume of water equal to the pool’s capacity to pass through the filter is known as the turnover rate. For example, if your pool holds 12,000 gallons of water, the turnover rate would be the time it takes for 12,000 gallons to pass through your filter. As a rough guide, most domestic pools (say at an average volume of 70m³ / 15,000 gallons0 will have a turnover rate of between 6 and 8 hours.

The size of the pool will determine the size of the filter you need to use.

As there are so many options available for pool-water heating we have decided not to list them in this guide. Your pool dealer/stockist will be able to advise you on the heating systems available and most appropriate system for your needs.

Sand filters are most commonly used. Finely graded silica sand is used for filtration. With proper maintenance the sand will remain in good condition and may not need to be changed for many years.

NB: Your dealer will be able to advise you on which filter to use. Cartridge filters are mainly used on above ground pools & spas. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is very rarely used but is an alternative to the filter products above.
