Winterisation

Step by step guide to Winterisation

In the U.K. most outdoor pools are only used during the summer. At the end of the swimming season pools are shut down for the winter. This is called ‘closing down’ or ‘winterising’ the pool. It is important to close your pool properly to protect it from damage caused by freezing and other problems that can occur during the winter. When you close your pool the right way with Sunspot®, it will be easy to get it ready to open in the spring when the warm weather returns. The quick way to winterise: § Sunspot® also offer a chemical winterising pack with an algaecide specifically designed for winter use. To achieve the best results it is recommended that the pool is not winterised until the water temperature drops to 10 0 C   Here are the steps that you should take when closing your pool: 1. Get your water balanced. Your water may already be balanced, but you will find out for sure when you take a water sample to your Sunspot® dealer for analysis. If the analysis shows that treatment is needed, follow the dealer’s instructions. Once any adjustments have been made the water has to be circulated. Test the pH again to be sure it is in the ideal winter range of 7.6 to 7.8. 2. Clean up. Brush the walls of your pool, then vacuum well. Clean the waterline with Sunspot® Tile & Liner Cleaner. Empty and clean the skimmer and pump strainer baskets. 3. Backwash or clean the filter thoroughly. If your filter media has not been cleaned recently, use Sunspot® Filter Cleaner as per the instructions on the box and bottles. Never close down the pool leaving dirty filter media as deposits and scale harden and toughen over winter, making it more difficult to remove in the spring. 4. Add a winter shock treatment. Shock dose the pool using Sunspot® Quick Shock Plus or Sunspot® Shock at the rate of 400g per 50m 3 . After adding the treatment according to the label directions, run your pump for several hours to distribute evenly. 5. Protect the pool from algae. When your pump and filter are not operating, it is easy for algae to take hold. Prevent this by using the Sunspot® Wintertop as per the directions on the box and labels. Run the pump and filter to circulate the water before going to step 6. 6. Partially drain the pool or not? All pools are different and because of this we recommend that you speak to your Sunspot® dealer about whether or not to partially drain your pool. 7. Prepare equipment for winter. Again we would recommend that you speak to your Sunspot® dealer about the best way to prepare your pool equipment for winter. 8. Cover your pool. A well designed pool cover will keep your pool relatively free of leaves and debris making it easier to clean your pool when spring arrives. In milder climates, some people choose to cover their pool to keep it clean and lessen maintenance but continue to operate the pump and filter as normal. If you do this, still treat as above but eliminate steps 6 and 7.
