Looking after your pool
Looking after your pool need not be a chore! All you need to remember is that sparkling clean and healthy water is easy to achieve.
These are the key areas to consider:
1. Keeping the pool-water clean, safe and comfortable.
Bacteria, algae and body substances can all build up to cause discomfort or infection to the swimmer, so it is important to remember to keep the water clean and hygienic.
Pool care products are designed primarily with water hygiene and safety in mind. So with regular dosing and testing of the pool-water, swimming should always be safe and enjoyable.
2. The Circulation and filtration of your pool-water
To make sure that all of the water in your pool is ideally balanced – it should be in regular circulation around your pool.
Filtration removes small particles and dead bacteria from your pool-water. Larger particles, debris and leaves are removed by the pump strainer basket and/or skimmer basket. A pool vacuum may also be used.
3. Protecting the structure / lining of your pool.
The corrosive powers of water are not to be underestimated
With the expense involved in buying a pool, you will obviously want to give it as long a life as possible. The tap water you use to fill your pool may have some damaging properties (see section on Total Alkalinity/Calcium Hardness) but these can be easily countered by testing the pool water regularly.
Keeping your pool-water in the right condition by knowing how to test it, and what to test for will minimise the effects of corrosion.
Other points to consider
Pool water conditions vary constantly. The number of people using your pool can dramatically change the balance of the water. Perspiration, skin and hair oils, sun tan lotions and cosmetics can make the water cloudy or irritable to eyes and skin.
Other outside influences such as sunlight, rainfall and air pollutants can also change the balance of your pool-water,
However, our hope is that the advice in this guide will allow you to confidently look after your pool, knowing that your family and friends will be enjoying themselves in complete safety.
